TrueCrypt and USB

I assume that you already know something about Truecrypt, simply it is a security application for our valuable documents to forbid unauthorized persons who want to access them without our knowledge.
Now we discuss how we can secure our USB devices with Truecrpyt and at the end we would have our precious documents within an USB device and we are going to access them on any computer which has windows operating system already.
Now what we need?
1-) Last Version of TrueCrypt which you can find it here
2-) An USB device which i use is Kingston DTI/4GB USB flash drive (2.0)

1-) General information about Truecrypt with USB
We needed to install Truecrypt on machines which we use our USB devices to access our USB devices which encrypted with it, but recent versions of Truecrypt (from version 3.1, January 22, 2005) we don’t need to install Truecrypt in any machine because we can install it our USB devices. 
But at this point you need to make some choices.
- Do you want to install TC on USB?
- Do you want to only encrypt your USB device with TC?
Let me expalain these a little more.
You can’t make partitions on USB devices because windows simply won’t recognize it and windows doesn’t support multipartitions on USB devices so if you want to encrpyt all of your USB device with Truecrypt you won’t able to install it on same USB device.
If you want to install TC on that device you can’t encrypt all device space because you need some place to put TC executable file in it, you can’t put TC files in an encrypted drive, you know :), at this point there would be two files in your USB device, TC executable files and an TrueCrypt file container (an encrpyted volume)
We don’t need any preparation honestly because windows will recognize your USB device automatically but in any case if you want to format your flash drive you are free to do that by right click on it at windows explorer context menu, see picture. Then you can choose if it would be formated as NTFS or FAT.
Or if you want to choose encrypt all your USB storage with TC, then you would aldreay have formatting options on TC settings later don’t worry about that yet.
Here we are, there are several options how to do that. I want to choose doing that by traveler mode because it has some benefits which has been explained here already.
a-) Installing Truecrypt on your system
Run TrueCrypt Setup 6.0.exe on your system and accept license terms, then you would see a window which gives you two options about TC installation, if you choose extract all working copies of TC would be extracted and they won’t integrade in your system files like registry, this would be proper for our purpose but if you want to use TC to encrypt your locale hard drive you should use install option. See picture.
Ok, you extracted TC in folder named TrueCrypt, now you need to run TrueCrypt.exe file. You are going to reach main screen of TC. Now follow the steps listed below please.
- Choose Tools->Travel Disk Setup… on toolbar of TC.
- Now you should be in Traveler Mod, there are two options File Settings and Autorun Configuration
Use browse button to select your USB Device then if you want a volume creation wizard you need to check it. Here is a quote.
if you need to create new TrueCrypt volumes using TrueCrypt run from the ‘traveler’ disk you will create. Unchecking this option saves space on the ‘traveler’ disk.
Autorun Configuration is tricky part of the traveler mod but I have already disabled autorun on my own OS so i don’t want any autorun option at TC, either. Also you should consider if you put your USB device on a computer where autorun has been disabled by owner of that computer, these configuration wouldn’t help us.
After all, i push the Create button and there are files in my USB device. These files are
1.356.992 TrueCrypt Format.exe
1.225.408 TrueCrypt.exe
235.712 truecrypt.sys
238.784 truecrypt-x64.sys
P.S: Numbers are the file sizes.
4-)Adding an encrypted volume to your USB device
Now you have a working copy of TC on your USB drive and you just need to run TrueCrypt.exe and you should choose Create File Container depends on your USB device storage, i will choose 3GB some.

5-) Why i need an USB device and TC with in it?
The size of my most important datas can feet on an USB disk and i have an option to secure them with TC for free. So why i shouldn’t, the simple configuration, high security, what do we need more? I higly recommend you to use key files to make your data more secure.
